Explosion and fire turn Houghton apartment complex into rubble

Keweenaw Report

HOUGHTON, MI— An explosion and resultant fire have destroyed a Houghton apartment building.

Houghton Police were notified of the fire around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the complex next to the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce Office and Welcome Center on College Avenue.

Keweenaw Report says several witnesses heard an explosion before the fire started. The fire was so severe, several cars at the front of the complex went up in flames.

All eight residents of the building got out safely. Many are reportedly Michigan Tech students. The university is helping them with clothing and a place to live.

The Salvation Army says it will post clothing sizes for donations as it gets them.

Two GoFundMe pages have been set up for victims of the fire: this one for MTU students Ziggy and Paul and this one for Albert and Debbie Aguilar.

The Salvation Army is also accepting donations on its Facebook page.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
