Dog lost in Iron Mountain house fire

WNMU-FM

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI— An Iron Mountain residence was rendered uninhabitable by a fire Thursday afternoon.

The City Fire Department was dispatched around 2:30 p.m. to the

800 block of East C Street. They found heavy fire on the first floor and flames threatening a house next door.

All occupants except the family dog were able to get out of the house. Firefighters searched the building, located the dog and brought it out. They started resuscitation efforts with a pet rescue kit and oxygen, then took the dog in a squad car to Iron Mountain Animal Hospital. Unfortunately, the dog didn’t make it.

No humans were injured in the fire, but the house is heavily damaged. Working smoke alarms alerted a woman and two children, who were sleeping on the second floor when the fire started.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
