46-acre wildfire near Pictured Rocks park contained

Michigan Department of Natural Resources

ALGER COUNTY, MI— Multi-agency firefighting crews have contained a 46-acre wildfire burning south of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Alger County.

Sunday around 1:50 p.m. a large plume of smoke was spotted about three quarters of a mile south of Twelvemile Beach Campground. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Burt Township Fire Department, and National Park Service responded.

The fire burned to within two-thirds of a mile south of the Park’s boundary before it was contained. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The fire continues to burn underground in the duff layer along the containment line in habitat that includes stands of hemlock. Officials say it could take days of continued effort to keep the fire contained.
