Fire at Keweenaw County camp under investigation

GRANT TOWNSHIP, MI— The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fire at a Grant Township camp.

Monday afternoon, deputies responded to a report of a large plume of smoke near Horse Shoe Harbor. A nearby camp owner checked the area prior to their arrival and found his camp, some woods, and a vehicle he owned ablaze.

The camp was fully engulfed by the time he arrived and is considered a total loss. The Copper Harbor and Lac La Belle fire departments, along with the Department of Natural Resources Fire Division, worked to keep the forest fire contained to a relatively small area.

The fire is suspected to have started between 11:45 a.m. and 2:47 p.m. Monday. The cause is unknown and the case is under investigation.

Anyone with information or tips can contact the Sheriff’s Office at 906-337-0528.
