Body found in Marquette home following fire

MARQUETTE, MI— One person was found dead in a house fire in Marquette Friday afternoon.

The City Fire Department was dispatched around 4:40 p.m. to 511 West Magnetic Street and found fire on the first floor. A three-person crew knocked down the flames within 15 minutes. When they searched the home, they discovered one person.

The fire was contained to the first floor. The rest of the house suffered heavy smoke damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A Marquette Fire Department fire investigator and Marquette Police Department detective were on the scene.

The name of the occupant is not being released at this time due to notification of family and completion of the investigation.

The Marquette City Fire Department was assisted by the Marquette City Police Department, Marquette Township Fire Department, Chocolay Township Fire Department, UPHS Unit 141, Marquette City Public Works, Marquette Board of Light and Power, and SEMCO Gas.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
