Toddler with lighter the cause of Escanaba apartment fire

ESCANABA, MI— One firefighter was injured while battling a fire at an Escanaba apartment complex Monday.

Escanaba Public Safety was dispatched around 5:45 p.m. to Sand Hill Town Homes at 711 Charlotte Court and found a living room engulfed in flames.

Officers quickly extinguished the fire. Apartments on either side were saved, but the fire destroyed the original apartment and all its contents.

Officers say the fire originated in the living room couch. It was caused by a toddler with a lighter. The incident remains under investigation.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries, but no one from the complex was injured.

Assisting in the incident were the Ford River Volunteer Fire Department, the City of Escanaba Electric and Water Departments, Rampart EMS, DTE, and Delta County Central Dispatch.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
