Crews battle wildfire in McCormick Wilderness

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI— The Yellow Dog Trail in Marquette County is closed due to a wildfire in the area.

The USDA Forest Service says the 98-acre fire was discovered Wednesday on the northeast side of the McCormick Wilderness, east of the Yellow Dog River. It’s burning mostly in the Wilderness, but the southeastern portion of the fire is affecting private land.

Forest Service and Michigan Department of Natural Resources crews are at the scene. They’re using minimum impact suppression tactics in the Wilderness and suppression tactics on private land. No structures are currently threatened.

Aircraft will be monitoring the fire and assisting crews on the ground.

Officials say smoke may be visible in the area.
