Residents escape Ely Township house fire

ELY TOWNSHIP, MI— Only minor damage was reported when fire broke out at an Ely Township house Monday morning.

WLUC-TV says it started in the basement of the Lawer Road home. Firefighters from Ishpeming Township, Richmond Township, Negaunee, and Rescue 131 responded to the scene. They were able to keep the fire confined to the basement.

The home’s residents made it out safely and two chinchillas were rescued.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
