Name of Escanaba fire victim released

ESCANABA, MI— Officials have released the name of the person who died in an Escanaba fire on January 24th.

It started in the early morning hours in a business at 1011 Ludington Street. Residents were told to evacuate but not all tenants were accounted for.

During excavation of the site, firefighters found the body of Randy Hughes, 52. His family has been notified.

Two buildings were destroyed and two others damaged in the fire, whose cause and origin remain under investigation.

The Michigan State Police crime lab has been assisting the Escanaba Department of Public Safety with the case.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
