Woman dies in Mohawk house fire

MOHAWK, MI— The body of a woman was found following a house fire in Mohawk early Thursday morning.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office says around 2 a.m., responders received a call about a structure fire at 83 6th Street.

Officials believe the fire started in the basement. A K-9 arson dog will be brought to the scene to detect if any accelerants are present.

The identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification of family members. No other details are available at this time.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by first responders from Allouez Township, Ahmeek, and Calumet.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
