LAURIUM, MI— Fire has destroyed the Laurium Department of Public Works building.

The Daily Mining Gazette says the village mechanic arriving for his shift discovered the fire around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday and called 911. The Laurium, Calumet Township, and Calumet Village fire departments responded, but the roof was gone just a few hours later.

Village Manager Ian Lewis says the building housed equipment like loaders, graders, sanders, and dump trucks. The Michigan Department of Transportation and community managers throughout the U.P. are coming up with a plan to keep Laurium roads plowed.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
