Teenager dies in Laurium house fire

LAURIUM, MI— A 15-year-old boy was killed in a house fire in Laurium over the weekend.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was called Saturday around 6 p.m. to a two-floor apartment on Wolverine Street. They found two residents standing outside and learned 15-year-old Xavier Sever was still inside on the second floor.

The rear entrance, which was used to access the second floor, was fully engulfed.

A deputy and an officer from the Laurium Police Department entered the apartment but couldn’t find a way to the second floor. They had to leave the building quickly due to heavy smoke.

After the fire was contained, Xavier was found deceased on the second floor. His mother was hospitalized.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Assisting in the incident were the Calumet Township Fire Department, Laurium Police Department, MSP Calumet Post, MSP Fire Marshall, Mercy Ambulance, and the Houghton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
