Vehicle fire destroys Escanaba business

ESCANABA, MI— An Escanaba building is considered a total loss, following a fire Wednesday.

The Escanaba Department of Public Safety was dispatched around 10:20 a.m. to U.P. Towing and Recycling at 2311 9th Avenue North on a report of a vehicle fire. Central Dispatch said the car was inside of a structure.

Upon arrival, officers saw clouds of black smoke and flames along the west and north sides of the building.

As crews were positioning the fire apparatus, they heard a number of explosions, and as fire suppression efforts commenced the explosions continued.

The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished. Its cause remains under investigation.

The building and its contents are a total loss.

Assisting in the incident were Delta County Central Dispatch, fire departments from Ford River Township, Escanaba Township, Bark River Township, and Brampton Township, Michigan State Police, Rampart EMS, The City of Escanaba Electric Department, the Red Cross, and A&L Iron and Metal.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
