Fire burns portion of swampy area in Negaunee

NEGAUNEE, MI— A brush fire has burned about half the size of a football field in Negaunee.

Sunday around 6:48 p.m., the Negaunee City Fire Department was dispatched to Rolling Mill Road near Miller Road. Crews found a brush fire in the cattails of a swamp on the south side of Rolling Mill Road. About 50 yards had burned, with some small pockets of fire left over.

Crews extinguished the flames using water from the truck and from a nearby creek.

Officials are reminding the community that with recent warm temperatures, strong winds and a lack of significant rainfall, there is still the potential for brush fires in the U.P.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
