Name of Kingsford resident in fatal fire released

KINGSFORD, MI— The Kingsford Public Safety Department has released the name of the person who died in an apartment fire on Saturday.

Crews responded in the early morning hours to a building at 229 East Breitung Avenue and encountered flames on the second floor.

The found Katrina Miilu, 33, in the apartment. First responders attempted resuscitation efforts at the scene, but they were unsuccessful. Miilu was later pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. KPS is working with fire investigators to determine the origin and circumstances surrounding the incident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
