Wakefield fire claims life

WAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI— One person died in a house fire in Wakefield Tuesday morning.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office says area first responders were dispatched around 5:26 a.m. to a residence on Kronberg Road in Wakefield Township. Upon arrival, deputies and the Wakefield Fire Department found one person outside the house. They gave the general location for another person inside.

Firefighters attempted to rescue the trapped individual but were unsuccessful due to heavy smoke and flames. Equipped with Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, firefighters located one victim in a bedroom. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.

Assisting in the incident were the Bessemer Township Fire Department, Beacon Ambulance, and the Gogebic County Victim Services Unit.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
