Wakefield home claimed by fire

WAKEFIELD, MI— A Wakefield home was a total loss, following a fire early Friday morning.

The Wakefield Fire Department was dispatched around 3:20 a.m. to 412 Sunday Lake Street and found flames coming from the attic.

Reports indicated all the home’s occupants were awakened by the fire. They were able to get out safely.

Firefighters battled the flames in 46-degree-below-zero wind chills. Despite their efforts in dangerous conditions, the structure was deemed a total loss. It was not insured.

Assisting in the incident were the Gogebic County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police from the Wakefield Post, Ironwood Public Safety, the Bessemer Township Fire Department, Ironwood Township, Beacon Ambulance, Wakefield Electric, Xcel Energy, and Victim Services.

Officials say mutual aid resources were critical due to the severity of the fire and extreme weather conditions.
