Man, cat safe following Escanaba apartment fire

ESCANABA, MI— An Escanaba apartment building was damaged by fire Sunday morning.

Department of Public Safety officers were dispatched around 4:16 a.m. to 710 4th Avenue South. They found smoke filling the upper apartment.

Crews extinguished flames in the kitchen area of the upper apartment, then remained on the scene for another 3.5 hours for overhaul operations. Both the upper and lower apartments had fire, smoke, and water damage.

One resident was taken to St. Francis Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. His cat was taken to the Delta Animal Shelter until he is released from the hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Assisting in the incident were the Ford River Township Fire Department, Rampart EMS, Delta County Central Dispatch, Escanaba City Electrical, DTE, and the Red Cross.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
