Explosion of electric bike may have ignited fatal Kingsford house fire

KINGSFORD, MI— A Kingsford resident has died in a house fire.

Tuesday around 11:21 p.m., the Kingsford Public Safety Department was dispatched to 109 Balsam Street on a report that an electric bicycle exploded. Officers found an active structure fire when they arrived.

Two occupants were able to get out of the home. One person was reported trapped and later pronounced dead. Several pets were also found deceased.

The Michigan State Police Fire Marshal is assisting Kingsford Public Safety in the investigation.

Assisting in the incident were the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch, the Iron Mountain Fire Department, Integrity Care Ambulance, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Iron Mountain Police Department, We Energies, and DTE.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
