Houghton debris fire put out before hillside catches

HOUGHTON, MI— Houghton firefighters extinguished a large debris fire behind the Sigma Pi fraternity house on College Avenue Monday.

Crews responded to the report of a hillside fire around 10 p.m. They found a pile of items—including a mattress—on fire, but were able to put the fire out before it reached nearby vegetation and trees.

Houghton City Fire Chief Eric James said winds could have spread the flames to the entire hillside. He reminds residents that the burning of debris is not permitted within the city limits.
