Nitrous oxide bottle explodes in burning car in Escanaba

ESCANABA, MI— Explosions were reported during a vehicle fire in Escanaba Friday night.

Department of Public Safety officers were dispatched around 9:42 p.m. to the 200 block of 1st Avenue South for a vehicle fire. Dispatch received several calls that explosions were coming from the vehicle. The source was later identified as a nitrous oxide bottle.

The vehicle was fully engulfed when officers arrived on scene. It was on the roadway with no other structures nearby. Officers were able to extinguish the flames.

The occupants got out of the vehicle safely and no injuries were reported.

Delta County Central Dispatch, the City of Escanaba Public Works, and Gene’s Towing assisted in the incident.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
