Brush fire discovered near Marquette's Park Cemetery

MARQUETTE, MI— Fire was discovered near Park Cemetery in Marquette early Sunday morning.

Around 1 a.m., the Marquette City Fire Department was dispatched to the Fit Strip area of the cemetery for the smell of smoke.

Officials found a brush fire burning within the tree line and underbrush. Crews began an initial attack to contain the fire, and Incident Command was established. Additional resources were requested, including a brush truck from Marquette Township Fire, a brush truck and tanker from Chocolay Township Fire, and additional personnel from Marquette.

The fire was contained to a 30-foot-square area. The cause remains under review.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
