Levin urges Snyder to veto weapons bill

WASHINGTON, D.C.--   U.S. Senator Carl Levin is urging Michigan Governor Rick Snyder to veto a concealed-weapons bill approved by a lame-duck session of the Michigan Legislature last week.

The bill would allow someone who gets extra training to have a concealed weapon in a gun-free zone, like churches and schools.

Snyder says his public safety concerns have been heightened and "deserve extra consideration" following a mass shooting that left 26 people—including 20 children—dead at a Connecticut elementary school.

On Monday Levin said, “the arguments in favor of this bill were flawed before last Friday.  Now, it is unthinkable that Michigan would make it easier to bring weapons closer to our children in their schools.”

President Barack Obama on Sunday pledged to seek change in memory of those slain by the gunman packing a high-powered rifle in Friday's mass shooting.
