Senate passes Choose Life plate bill

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The state Senate has approved a bill that would allow for the sale of license plates as a fundraiser for Choose Life Michigan.

Senators voted 26-11 along party lines Wednesday to approve the bill, which would collect a $25 donation from buyers of the license plate. The $25 would go to the Choose Life Fund, backed by Right to Life Michigan.

Democrats failed to win several amendments, including one to create a fundraising license plate for Planned Parenthood.

The bill's sponsor is Sen. Patrick Colbeck. The Canton Republican says the Choose Life plates would support mothers with unwanted pregnancies and their babies.

Similar legislation for a Choose Life license plate has been introduced in previous sessions but never signed into law.

The bill heads to the House for consideration.
