City of Marquette won't release Vajda's emails

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Freedom of Information Act request for Marquette City Manager Bill Vajda’s emails has been denied by the Marquette City Commission.

Michael Neiger—who started www.savefounderslandingbeach.com—requested emails from the entire month of December 2014.  The request included all subject matter.

The City Clerk’s office originally said the request was too vague to comply.  Officials said thousands of emails would also have to be redacted—some heavily—for information like attorney correspondence and personnel issues.  That would require employee overtime and would likely run over City Clerk David Bleau’s retirement date.

Neiger appealed to the city commission, which voted down the request Monday night.  Officials said Neiger needs to be more specific when it comes to subject matter.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
