Kivela introduces meth-curtailing bill

LANSING, MI--   State Representative John Kivela has introduced legislation that would further crack down on meth production.

The bill limits the number of products containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine that a person can buy in a 30-day period.  It also limits how much can be purchased without a valid doctor’s prescription within a year.

The house bill would reduce the amount of the drugs a person could purchase from 9 grams to 7.2 grams in a 30-day period.  The amount that could be bought per year without a valid prescription would be capped at 61.2 grams.

The bill would not prohibit a person from going to a doctor for additional products containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine.

Marquette County Sheriff Greg Zyburt says the legislation effectively cuts the available amounts of the key ingredient in making methamphetamine.
