U.P. park to appear on new quarter

MUNISING, MI--   Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is appearing on a brand new quarter.

The coin is the 41st release of the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters Program, a 12-year initiative that honors 56 national parks and other national sites.

The Pictured Rocks quarter will be launched February 7 at a ceremony at Mather Elementary School in Munising. U.S. Mint personnel, park officials, and others will attend. It will include a ceremonial coin pour and an exchange of $10 rolls of newly minted Pictured Rocks quarters.

The Mint is also holding a coin forum the day before the launch ceremony at the Munising Township office. It’s an opportunity for residents to learn about upcoming coin programs and express their views about future coinage.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
