DNR to temporarily close Deer Lake state forest campground in Iron County

UPMatters

The Deer Lake state forest campground located in Iron County will temporarily close beginning today for removal of trees that present a hazard to campers and other visitors. The timber is being cut for prescribed forest management, mainly aspen and spruce/fir regeneration.

During a recent forest inventory, Michigan Department of Natural Resources foresters found dead spruce and fir trees, along with dying birch, in the campground.

The campground was included in a larger timber sale area south of Deer Lake. Foresters determined these circumstances presented a good opportunity to remove the hazardous trees at the campground and to salvage what value remained in the timber.

The campground will re-open Wednesday, June 26.
