Department of Labor official talks Biden initiative

LANSING, MI (MPRN)— The U.S. Department of Labor’s chief economist spoke before a Michigan-based policy group Monday.

Janelle Jones spoke during the Michigan League for Public Policy forum. She highlighted potential aid for states through the Biden Administration’s “Build Back Better” initiative.

Jones said states that have federal COVID-19 relief funds left should spend that money on immediate priorities.

“And I think it also makes the case to say we got some money, we spent it well, here’s the people we helped, here’s how much people really enjoyed it, here’s how much economic hardship we were able to address and then make the case for more,” she said.

Some Michigan lawmakers and local governments have supported taking a slower approach on infrastructure and other spending, with the potential for more federal money on the way.

House Democrats last week called for the state legislature to accept remaining aid from a December stimulus package.
