Senate Oversight hearing on Dept. of Corrections set for Feb. 1

LANSING, MI-- Senate Oversight Committee Chairman Ed McBroom on Thursday announced the committee will meet Tuesday, Feb. 1 to hear from Department of Corrections Director Heidi Washington about workplace safety and other concerns at state correctional facilities.

McBroom and committee Minority Vice Chair Sen. Jeff Irwin sent letters to Washington earlier this month requesting information and answers about the alleged concerns, which include forced overtime, worker shortages, staff assaults, officer recruitment and retention, funding, and inmate safety.

McBroom said the hearing will be the first of three or four hearings on the department. It will take place at 2 p.m. in Room 1300 of the Senate’s Binsfeld Office Building, located at 201 Townsend Street in Lansing.
