Governor makes more UP stops on 'budget tour'

Office of the Governor

ESCANABA, MI— Governor Gretchen Whitmer continued a tour of the Upper Peninsula Thursday highlighting the recently passed state budget.

She delivered remarks to graduates of the Upper Peninsula Construction Council’s inaugural Building Trades Summer Camp in Gladstone. Camp participants spent the past six weeks learning skills to get a jumpstart on their careers or further training after graduation.

Whitmer also spent time at the Upper Peninsula State Fair. She attended a ceremony honoring 2022 U.P. Veteran of the Year, Tracey Tippett. Tippett is a Marine who served in uniform for six years and is considered an anchor of the U.P. veteran community for decades.

The governor presented Tippett with a special tribute from the state of Michigan in recognition of her community service.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
