McBroom introduces bipartisan bill to offer 50/50 pension option for corrections officers

LANSING, MI— State Senator Ed McBroom has co-authored legislation that would give Michigan corrections officers new retirement options.

The bills would allow COs to join a retirement plan similar to one offered to Michigan State Police troopers, in which 50 percent of the plan is a pension and 50 percent is a 401(k)-type contribution.

McBroom says he’s been contacted by several people in the U.P. about the issue. At a time when the state is struggling to hire enough people to keep prisons safe, he believes the bipartisan legislation could help improve safety by boosting the recruitment and retainment of corrections officers.

The bills have been referred to the Senate Committee on Labor for consideration.
