Senate bill contains money for UP university projects

WASHINGTON, D.C.— A bill passed by the Senate Appropriations Committee would fund Upper Peninsula-based small business enterprises.

The Fiscal Year 2024 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act includes $1.145 million for Northern Michigan University. It would create a Security Operations Center to serve as a resource for small businesses and entrepreneurs in the Upper Peninsula.

The legislation also contains $250,000 for Michigan Technological University. The money would be used to create an accelerator to support research and jobs related to advanced materials and critical minerals used in the automotive and defense industries.

The bill now goes to the full Senate.
