"The Bluffs" development approved by Marquette officials

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission has approved a site condominium development request on the Forestville Basin Trail.

The subdivision—to be called “The Bluffs”—will have up to eight single-family units. The approval allows the developer to prepare a master deed for the project, which will be reviewed to determine compliance with city ordinances and standards before final approval.

At its Monday meeting, the commission also heard a presentation about environmental considerations if the city and state agree to a land swap. The state is eyeing the former Cliffs-Dow site for a possible new veterans facility, and the city could acquire the site of what is now the Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

Special Counsel to the city, Richard Baron, said owners or operators of contaminated sites, regardless of liability, must exercise “due care” with respect to the contamination. That means conducting baseline environmental assessments and taking other necessary steps to assure safe use of the property.

City Manager Karen Kovacs said the city needs to consider such things if it decides to do the land swap.
