Rickard selected as mayor of Hancock

HANCOCK, MI— The City of Hancock has a new mayor.

Kurt Rickard was the unanimous choice at a City Council special meeting Monday night. He has taken on Hancock’s mayoral duties since former mayor Paul LaBine left the council in July to be Houghton County prosecutor.

Lisa McKenzie was selected to replace Rickard as mayor pro tem.

Rickard says one of his priorities will be to figure out what to do with former Finlandia University properties. The council is meeting with Congressman Jack Bergman this week to discuss the issue.

Six people are candidates to fill the council seat left open by LaBine’s resignation. One will be selected at the council’s regular meeting Wednesday.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
