Cleanup of Cliffs-Dow site approved by Marquette City Commission

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission has approved a contract for Tri-Media Environmental and Engineering to clean up the former Cliffs-Dow site.

The City has obtained an EPA Brownfield Cleanup Grant for the project, which is expected to cost about $125,000 dollars.

At a meeting Monday night, Commissioner Jenna Smith said while the State of Michigan is no longer interested in the site for a new veterans home, cleanup will allow for additional options.

“I think that there could be an opportunity for something to happen there in the future and this is one step to help get us towards possibilities instead of no possibilities.”

Cleanup of the site is expected to be completed by fall of 2025.

Also at the meeting, commissioners approved resolutions proposing amendments to the City charter, voted to add Founders Piers to the list of possible special event locations, and approved artist Brian Wignall’s design of a dragonfly to be installed at the new Kids Cove playground.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
