Legislation by Reps. Prestin, Markkanen focus on DNR search warrants, body cams

LANSING, MI— Two U.P. lawmakers have introduced bills they say would modernize the Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.

108th District Representative Dave Prestin’s bill would require the DNR to obtain a search warrant before accessing private property. Conservation officers would not need a warrant if they get permission to enter, when in hot pursuit of a suspect, to protect life, or preserve evidence.

110th District Representative Greg Markkanen’s bill would remove a departmental rule prohibiting DNR officials from wearing body cameras.

The bills are headed to a House committee for further consideration.
