DOGE cancels leases for 3 federal offices in the UP

MARQUETTE, MI— The Department of Government Efficiency says it will cancel the leases of three federal department offices in the Upper Peninsula.

On its website’s “Wall of Receipts”, DOGE lists six Michigan locations it intends to close in order to save money.

Impacted in the U.P. are:

• Baraga—The Bureau of Indian Affairs. A 1,200 square-foot facility. Annual lease amount: $14,400.
• Marquette—Internal Revenue Service national office. A 3,122 square-foot facility. Annual lease amount: $53,343.
• Sault Ste. Marie—Indian Health Service. An 1,100 square-foot facility. Annual lease amount: $34,375.

The lease cancelations amount to a total of $102,118. There’s no indication when the offices might close.

In a statement, U.S. Senator Gary Peters says, “Reckless funding cuts being carried out by the Trump Administration and DOGE will have major consequences for Michiganders, especially for those in rural and Tribal communities who might already have limited access to government services. Any plans to close regional offices and fire local staff are simply irresponsible and could cause unnecessary interruptions to the services that so many Michigan residents depend on to pay their bills and keep their families healthy. I’ll fight back against these types of changes to ensure Michiganders can continue to have someone in their community who can help get to the bottom of any issue that might come up.”

Public Radio 90 has also requested comment from Congressman Jack Bergman and Senator Elissa Slotkin.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
