MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission has approved a contract for in-situ remediation services at the former Cliffs-Dow site.
The Environmental Protection Agency gave the city a grant for more than $964,000 in 2023 for evaluation and cleanup services at the site. At its meeting Monday night, the commission voted unanimously to award the contract to ORIN Technologies of Verona, Wisconsin.
Mayor pro tem Paul Schloegel said he doubts the site will be 100 percent cleaned up in his lifetime, but it’s a step in the right direction.
“I’m really proud that, as a commission, we can sit here and say that we’re doing steps to make the site the best that we can with the ways that we have at our fingertips in 2025.”
The Cliffs-Dow Chemical Company produced wood chemicals like methanol and wood tar at the site until 1969. The City of Marquette purchased the property in 1997.
