Bill to rename part of Spalding Township highway after soldier passes MI House

SPALDING TOWNSHIP, MI— A bill that would designate a stretch of US-41 in Menominee County as the Specialist David Anthony Wilkey Jr. Memorial Highway has passed the House.

The 22-year-old Wilkey was deployed in Iraq in 2007 when he was killed by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

The legislation is sponsored by Representative Dave Prestin.

The section of highway Prestin is working to rename is just south of Powers in Spalding Township, where Wilkey grew up.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
