Copper Country schools to get teen clubs through grant

HOUGHTON, MI— A $50,000 grant from Prevention Network will enable a teen program to expand to more schools in the Copper Country.

Houghton/Keweenaw Communities that Care and Dial Help will use the funding to maintain Wyman’s Teen Outreach Program Club—or TOP Club—at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Hancock, Calumet, Ewen-Trout Creek and Chassell schools.

The clubs meet weekly for interactive lessons that include topics like emotion management, problem solving, goal setting, and adolescent health and wellness. They also participate in activities like sledding, beach days, hiking and community service. Additional schools that will begin hosting TOP Club will be announced soon.

Prevention Network also awarded funds to the Dickinson/Iron Communities That Care coalition to bring TOP Club to their counties. Dial Help will work with the coalition to oversee the groups, which will save over $30,000 in start-up costs.
