PTF talks about boosting rural childcare, gives poverty-fighting recommendations

Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity

MARQUETTE, MI— The Michigan Poverty Task Force visited Marquette Tuesday to share its latest recommendations and share resources for those impacted by poverty.

The group recently released a list of 29 new policy recommendations to help struggling Michiganders, addressing such areas as housing, healthcare, food insecurity, and education.

Tuesday’s event was held at the Lake Superior Youth and Family Center in Marquette. Officials discussed a proposal calling for the creation of a state Rural Child Care Initiative, which would aim to accelerate the startup and expansion of licensed child care businesses in areas with more than three children under age 5 for every licensed child care slot.

They also talked about the Michigan Tri-Share Child Care program. It divides the cost of childcare among eligible employees, their employer, and the State of Michigan.
