Marinette food pantry overwhelmed by community need

MARINETTE, WI— The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marinette Food Pantry is struggling to meet demand.

Executive Director Ashley Berken says in a typical year, the pantry sees between 50 and 100 people a week. This year, it’s between 300 and 600 people a week. What she calls a “perfect storm” has increased demand to previously-unseen levels.

“The effects of local food resource agencies closing their doors; the pandemic has had rippling effects still to this day—especially pandemic EBT benefits dropping off earlier this year; and the ever-increasing grocery costs and inflation.”

Berken says residents can help by donating money or food, volunteering, or by shopping in the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store. All store proceeds directly fund the food pantry program.
