Bill would help convert HNJH to 501(c)(3) hospital

NEWBERRY, MI— State Senator Ed McBroom has introduced a bill that would allow Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry to convert from a municipal to a 501(c)(3) facility.

He says the hospital is caught in an old law from the 80s that makes it a quasi-county, quasi-nonprofit hospital, which now restricts it from performing various community services.

“A lot of hospitals around the area are able to have kind of a sub-set at the hospital that’s selling wheelchairs, shower chairs, CPAP machines, things like that, and this is something that no one’s able to currently do in Newberry. It would help the hospital be able to provide that really important medical equipment.”

McBroom’s bill passed the Senate last week and was sent to the House, which should hold a hearing on it this week.
