LANSING, MI (AP)-- Michigan officials are considering running an exchange where residents could buy private health insurance in partnership with the federal government. That's because time is running short for the state to set up its own exchange.
House Republicans have refused to let state officials use $9.8 million in federal planning dollars to start setting up the MI Health Marketplace, saying they wanted to wait and see if the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down all or part of the Affordable Care Act on Thursday.
But state Licensing and Regulatory Affairs director Steve Hilfinger has warned for months that delaying could mean Michigan will run out of time to put a state health exchange in place by January as the federal law requires.
