Michigan meningitis toll at 181

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Michigan health officials say the number of state residents infected during a national outbreak of fungal meningitis has risen to 181, with 13 deaths.

The Michigan Department of Community Health says that as of Monday, there have been 68 meningitis cases, 102 epidural abscesses, one stroke and 10 joint infections.

The fungal meningitis outbreak is linked to contaminated steroids produced by a Massachusetts pharmacy used in injections for neck or back pain.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
