Snyder's attempt to expand Medicaid stalled again

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Another committee in the Republican-led Michigan Legislature has rejected Republican Governor Rick Snyder's proposed expansion of Medicaid eligibility to more state residents.

The Senate Health Budget Subcommittee on Thursday passed a spending plan without the expansion. A House panel took a similar step last month.

Snyder and advocates have yet to persuade lawmakers to act more than two months after the governor called for Medicaid expansion under the federal health care overhaul.

Some Republicans say they're open to changing course if Snyder pursues a federal government waiver to make changes to Medicaid. The changes could include asking Medicaid recipients to contribute more to the cost of their care and incentivizing them to lead healthier lives.

Lawmakers want to approve the next state budget by June 1.
