MI agencies address chronic pain management

LANSING, MI (AP)--   State government departments are working together to improve pain management for Michigan residents.

The Community Health and Licensing and Regulatory Affairs departments on Wednesday received recommendations from a state advisory committee on pain and symptom management.

LARA Acting Director Mike Zimmer says the departments will work with care providers and pharmacists to improve residents' quality of life. He says the committee outlined a core curriculum on pain for Michigan's medical and health professional schools.

The committee says a key goal is to reduce drug overdoses. It says up to 3 million Michigan residents experience chronic pain every day.

Michigan is one of six states participating in a National Governors Association project to combat prescription drug abuse.
