State gets funding for colorectal cancer screenings

LANSING, MI--   Michigan has received a five-year grant to improve colorectal cancer screening rates in the state.

The money was awarded to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Cancer Prevention and Control Section from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Officials are hoping to increase screening rates from the current 72 percent to 80 percent by 2018.

Michigan was one of 30 agencies in the U.S. to get funding to work with health systems to modify their systems and policies to improve CRC screening.

The state was one of only six agencies to get a grant to help reduce disparities among vulnerable, low-income populations whose screening rates are below the state average.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
