Western U.P. school cancels classes because of sick students

ONTONAGON, MI--   Another U.P. school district has closed because of illness.

WLUC-TV reports Ontonagon Area Schools shut their doors Thursday because 87 students were out sick with flu-like symptoms.  Superintendent James Bobula says that brought the district below the 75 percent threshold it needs to meet for attendance rates in the state.

Classes are expected to resume Monday.

Ontonagon wasn’t the only area to deal with sick students this week.  L’Anse Area Schools and Sacred Heart were also closed Tuesday and Wednesday because of a high incidence of respiratory illness.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
